A Bird's Eye and a Deer's Eye
Planning out edible ecosystems for urban streets is best done from two viewpoints: a bird's eye and a deer's eye.
We need the bird's-eye view to see how the streets line up with the green spaces, sidewalks, and buildings. Where are the opportunities for canopy trees, fruit trees, medicinal meadows, and gardens, and can we use this view to better plan and design from a heightened perspective?
For this, I use a drone.
For a deer's-eye view, we may look at how deer might access the fruit and whether the trees need extra protection, but really, we are asking how we move through the landscape. How is accessibility for all people, and how does it work for best management, harvest, and enjoyment?
A tree that is never greeted is one poorly cared for.
So designing this urban site on a busy Winnipeg street required both.
